Finding care that feels right.

Choosing a care home takes thought, whether you are planning ahead or looking for support soon. You can come to us with questions before you have all the answers.

We will listen to what matters to the person you care for, explain the care available here and help you decide whether a visit would be useful. There is time to see the home and meet the people who provide that care.

The care behind everyday life.

Care that feels personal

The person’s interests, relationships and choices should continue to shape daily life.

Choice in the day

Shared lounges, gardens and a patio give people places for company or a little quiet.

Family stays close

The people closest to someone remain part of their life here, through visits and conversations about their care.

Devonport Park

Fresh air and time together.

Higher Park Lodge sits within Devonport Park. Its gardens and patio offer places to enjoy the outdoors close to home, while the park itself gives families space to walk and spend time together during a visit.

A house that began as the park’s pavilion.

Devonport Park opened in 1858, the first park created for public recreation in any of Plymouth’s three towns. The house that is now Higher Park Lodge came later, in the years after 1894, as the park’s refreshment pavilion. The cast-iron verandahs and balconies it was built with are still there today.

Family experiences

In the words of families.

My daughter and I discovered Higher Park Lodge by chance whilst walking in Devonport Park. We knocked on the door … Apart from getting married, knocking on that door was possibly the best decision I made in my life.

“Mum spent the past 3 years plus at Higher Park Lodge where she was well cared for. … she always told me that she was happy with her ‘home’ and the staff who looked after her.”

“My grandma came to this care home for a restbite as my mother was on holiday. The staff are absolutely wonderful and were always attentive and most importantly had a smile on their faces.”

Fees and funding

Understanding the cost of care.

The cost depends on the care a person needs. Ask us about the weekly fee, what it covers and any extra charges. If you may need council support, tell us early so we can discuss the next steps.

One

Paying privately

We can talk through the likely costs with you first. Once the person’s care needs have been assessed, we will give you a clear weekly fee.

Ask about: the weekly fee, what is included and how it may change.

Two

Support from the council

If you are seeking help from Plymouth City Council, let us know. The council can explain its assessments, and we can explain the home’s fees.

Ask about: the council’s care needs and financial assessments.

Three

Not sure where you stand

You do not need to know how care will be paid for before you call. We can explain the home’s fees and the questions to ask the council.

Start with: the person’s care needs and the questions you have about cost.

Before you make a decision, ask for the weekly fee in writing, what is included, any separate charges and how fees are reviewed. For advice about paying for care, speak to the council or an independent adviser.

Bring the person who may come to live here, if they would like to visit, or someone whose opinion you trust. We will show you around and make time to talk about care.
